Planning a Visit
East Clare encompasses the spirit of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. On these Co. Clare Lough Derg shores you can really get active in nature. From great walking trails, greenways, blueways and woodlands showcasing the region’s natural hidden treasures you can delve deep into this natural wonderland. With pristine waterways at your disposal you can go boating, fishing, swimming, sailing, kayaking, paddling and even water skiing, all while experiencing the natural beauty of the River Shannon as it settles into the picturesque Lough Derg.
With culture and heritage informing every highway, byway and town and village you will see the landscape that was home to Ireland’s ancient High King Brian Boru and the locations most important in his story. And you will see the landscape and lush green fields and tree-fringed roads where wildlife and birds proliferate and glimpse vistas of the lake from very turn of the road. There are even remnants of Ireland’s Pagan and Early Christian heritage in this area which include St Cronan’s 10th Century Cathedral in Tuamgraney or nearby Brian Boru’s Ring Fort in Killaloewith its impressive sheer scale.
You can also visit Holy Island, one of the most famous monastic sites in Ireland, in isolated splendour in the centre of Lough Derg. So, if you feel like taking a spin out to this charming corner of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands you will have plenty of things to do and see.
Our Chocolate Factory visit is a really great place to start or end your Lough Derg excursion. It’s a perfect rainy-day activity for kids and adults alike, where you can learn about our chocolate making methods, taste what we are making on the day and even try out some new chocolate flavour experiment if you are lucky. There’s also our Hot Chocolate Café where you can rest a while after your walk or cycle or refresh yourself before launching into the next part of your visit.
