Walking, cycling, kayaking, sailing or even swimming in Lough Derg you would be unable to miss one of the most fabulous attractions on the lake. In the centre of the lake and visible from many vantage points lies Holy Island, one of the most famous monastic sites in Ireland. Take the time to visit here if you can as it’s only accessible by boat and you will certainly feel the spirit of the ancient monastic site and round tower.
Who knows, you might even see one of the Mountshannon Sea Eagles that are nesting on a nearby island. St Cronan’s 10th Century church in Tuamgraney is also well worth a visit situated in the pretty village of Tuamgraney.
While Killaloe with its 12th Century cathedral church of St. Flannan’s will prove worthy of a trip, as will the Flannan’s Roman Catholic church in Killaloe with its collection of stained glass windows by the internationally renowned stained-glass artist Harry Clarke (1889-1931).
